Story

An art piece from the “Wearable Sculpture” series by artist Kelly M Noonan I’ve long wanted to use this quartz stalactite disk in a piece and knew exactly the context of the piece. Within the Vincent Van Gough painting “The Starry Night”. The center of the star Venus specifically. After a lot of thought I landed on an approach to my take on the masters painting. The quartz stalactite forms the centerpiece of a removable pendant representing the “Venus” star. It sits before my favorite portion of the painting, a swirling galaxy of stars and color. The swirling Whirlpool Galaxy always reminded me of two hands with fingers clasp in unity. A citrine set stone-in-stone in the center of the quartz disk within a fine silver frame accented with plique-`a-jour enamel along the outer edges. The pendant hangs from a thick silver snake chain which is hidden behind a foreground enameled crescent panel. The backdrop is a recreation of the swirling galaxy section of “The Starry Night”. I have created the image with enamel (a form of powdered glass) on copper as a quadriptych sit 2 on 2 rather than in a line. Not an exact representation of the painting I have taken liberties on the layout by adding a portion of the cypress trees shown in the foreground of the paintings lower left. Van Gough produced countless shades of blue with oil paint however I’ve identified several distinct blue opaque enamels used to create the undulating, swirling motion in the piece. One panel is set with a citrine in the center of another of the stars. The enamel pieces are set in a handmade cypress wood frame with purpleheart wood accents. The overall piece is 11.5 inches square and 2.5 inches thick. The jewelry piece is about 2.5 inches wide hung from a 20 inch snake chain. Fine silver, sterling silver, enamel, copper, quartz, citrine, cypress and purpleheart wood.
